The City of Encinitas retained Barnhart Balfour Beatty to provided construction management services to build Fire Station No. 3, a $3.55 million project. The 7,256-square-foot, two-story station, which is twice the size of the 1970s-era station demolished on the same site, is designed to house one fire engine and a rescue trailer, and an additional engine and firefighting personnel when needed to manage large-scale incidents such as wildfires or flooding.
The first floor includes offices, a training classroom, physical fitness area and three oversized bays for fire trucks and other emergency equipment. A living area upstairs includes bedrooms, a dining area, a kitchen and a day room with an outdoor deck. The design includes a number of environmental sustainability features including storm water management, water-wise landscaping, energy-saving lighting and the use of recycled building materials.
