Barnhart Balfour Beatty provided design-build services to construct the $23 million College of Arts & Letters at San Diego State University. Features of the design-build project include a six-story steel frame building with a two-story auditorium and four-story, 200-space, cast-in-place parking structure. The structure boasts advanced technology infrastructures, including video conferencing capabilities and state-of the arts lecture projection systems. Recycled materials were utilized and the building is the recipient of an energy efficiency award by San Diego Gas & Electric.
Extensive use of value engineering solutions were utilized, including use of a keystone wall system as well as the development of sloping and stepping design for a large auditorium.
The College of Arts & Letters houses the largest of the seven colleges at SDSU, encompassing 20 academic departments and 15 centers/institutes. In addition, it accounts for nearly 30 percent of all credit hours for SDSU’s 33,000 students by providing the core liberal arts courses required for bachelor’s degrees.
