Barnhart Balfour Beatty joint ventured with Clark and Roel Construction to manage the design and construction of the new Petco Park for the San Diego Padres and the City of San Diego. The joint venture, known as The San Diego Ballpark Builders (SDBB), completed the new $235-million ballpark in time for the first home game in spring of 2004.
Designed to reflect the unique spirit of San Diego, it is a modern and an irregular shaped ballpark with an intimate atmosphere and state-of-the-art amenities. It incorporates innovative, contemporary, distinctive design elements and includes garden terraces, spacious concourses that open to the sky, and beautiful landscaping throughout the park. The Ballpark includes approximately 42,000 fixed-seats located on three decks with a total capacity of 46,000.
Adding to its civic value, the Ballpark anchors a larger redevelopment district, featuring hotels, offices, retail and residential components that have transformed the previously underutilized East Village into a vibrant new neighborhood and a popular year-round destination for residents, employees and tourists alike. An existing downtown historic landmark, Western Metal Supply Company Building, was renovated and incorporated into the ballpark, with the left-field foul pole attached to its southeastern corner, 334 feet from home plate. The 95-year-old structure houses the Padres Team Store on the first floor, with a door opening onto a standing room area in left field. The second and third floors feature festive party suites. A restaurant on the fourth floor provides terrace dining with superb views of the field. In addition, there is bleacher seating and standing room on the roof, 80 feet above the field.
In addition, as part of giving back to the community, SDBB promoted the use of small business such as Historically Underutilized Business Enterprises (HUBEs) and helped employ the people of San Diego. Over 900 residents attended the job orientation and apprenticeship training programs through the SDBB outreach efforts. The total HUBE participation was 32% of the construction cost. This outreach program helped many San Diegans become a part of a huge historical and monumental event.
