Berth Lima Conversion
San Diego, Calif.

Barnhart Balfour Beatty provided Design-Bid-Build services to the U.S. Navy for the design and construction of buildings and facilities upgrades to Berth Lima at Naval Base Coronado. The upgrades are being made to accommodate planned industrial maintenance activities and cold-iron berthing for the Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carriers home-ported in San Diego. The project completed in April 2010.

The project includes the construction of a security building, pump house building, restroom/payphone building, two masonry and steel watch towers, two guard houses, security fencing, high-mast security lighting, upgrades to underground water and electric utilities, and surveillance infrastructure.  Waterfront upgrades include replacing asphalt with new quayside concrete capable of supporting 40-ton forklifts, widening the existing quay wall by two feet, and installing 80 new primary fender piles, fender panels and armor rock. Construction began in May 2009.
