Seismic Improvements to Utility Bridge/Telecommunications Building
San Diego, Calif.

Barnhart Balfour Beatty was selected as the general contractor to complete this $8M seismic upgrade project to meet the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Design (OSHPD) requirements. This highly complex project involved the relocation of utilities from an existing concrete utility support structure to a new route located parallel to existing structure. The utilities involved in this upgrade included relocated electrical switches, primary electrical 5kV emergency and 12kV normal power feeders and chilled water lines.

The existing utility support structure was demolished and all affected work areas were landscaped after the utilities were successfully relocated. Beyond the primary utility upgrades, the project also required the relocation of the Medical Center’s low voltage/ telecommunication trunk lines and the structural upgrade to the existing Telecommunication building.

Barnhart worked with the Hillcrest Medical Campus and representatives from the University to ensure that all work being performed did not interfere with daily operations. For example, construction crews scheduled the disconnection and reconnection of utilities after normal business operations to minimize any possibility of downtime during construction.
